What should I wear on your wedding day?

As part of the initial conversation with each couple, I ask “What should I wear on your wedding day?”  Often the answer is “Wear whatever you want.”

Even though my question was answered, I feel my wedding day attire should be discussed.  It is important to blend in by wearing their wedding colors when possible.

Knowing what the groom is wearing also helps when choosing my wedding day outfit. If he is wearing a jacket, I will wear a jacket.

Another consideration is the location and background of the ceremony area.

Here are a few thoughts about the importance of discussing what the officiant wears.

  • Is the wedding, formal, semi-formal, business casual or casual?  The officiant should dress accordingly.
  • Even if the wedding is casual I ask the couple “What should I wear?”
  • Keep in mind the officiant is in every ceremony photo.
  • My preference is solid colors such as gray and blue.  No prints or bold colors.
  • My wardrobe options are a dress, a dress with a jacket, suit, slacks with or without a jacket.
  • I rarely wear all black or white unless it is the bride’s preference.
  • Themed weddings can be tricky.  Luckily I had a flapper dress to officiate a Gatsby inspired wedding.
  • Considering the weather in Florida is hot I put my jacket on just before going down the aisle and always have a handkerchief in my pocket.

The focus should be on the bride and groom on their wedding day and not what the officiant was wearing.
